Fares Case Becomes A Major Obstacle For Lazio

September 29, 2025

The case of Mohamed Fares has become one of the most complicated issues of Lazio’s current transfer market. The Algerian winger, who also holds a French passport, is once again in the spotlight, not for performances on the pitch but for his uncertain future with the club.

After returning from a loan spell in Greece, Fares has found himself completely outside Maurizio Sarri’s project. The coach has made it clear: the winger is not part of his plans. He has not featured, nor has he even been included in the squad list for the opening matchdays of the season. Despite this, the player continues to resist every possible exit.

Several opportunities have come and gone. The latest rejection was an offer from Abu Dhabi, while earlier proposals from Russia were also turned down by the player for personal reasons. Each refusal has further complicated Lazio’s attempts to lower the wage bill and create space for potential reinforcements.

Fares currently earns a reported €1.2 million net per season, a significant salary for someone who is not contributing on the field. His decision to remain in Rome, even without playing, has effectively tied the club’s hands. Lazio’s management would prefer to free up the roster spot and wage resources, but negotiations have stalled at every turn.

The transfer window remains open in some non-European markets, leaving the door slightly ajar for a late move. However, such a solution would require Fares to change his stance, something that so far has not happened.

For Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani, the “Fares case” has become a pressing priority. While Lazio continue to pursue other transfer objectives, resolving the future of the Algerian remains crucial. Until then, the situation risks overshadowing the club’s wider market strategy
