Flaminio Project Faces New Delay As Rome Requests More Documents From Lazio
Lazio’s Stadio Flaminio project has reportedly hit a new obstacle in the approval process, with Rome’s City Council asking the club to provide additional supporting documentation before the proposal can move forward.
According to reporting that cites Il Corriere dello Sport, the municipality has raised several critical issues and is not treating the material Lazio submitted as sufficient under the current legal framework. The main problem is the nature of the dossier itself. The file is being viewed as a pre feasibility study, not the higher level technical and economic project documentation that the procedure requires at this stage, meaning Lazio will need to submit a more advanced and detailed package before the process can progress.
From an architectural and heritage standpoint, the concerns are described as significant. One of the points highlighted is the absence of reference to the Conservation Plan linked to the Getty Foundation’s Keeping it Modern programme, a plan that is widely treated as a key baseline for interventions on a protected modern landmark like the Pier Luigi and Antonio Nervi designed Flaminio. The request is reportedly for a deeper review that includes clearer site delimitation and a more robust study of the project’s visual and structural impact.
Transport is another major file the City wants strengthened. The council is said to be asking for further analysis of access flows, public transport integration, shuttles, parking, and boarding facilities, plus compatibility with surrounding venues and traffic patterns in the wider Flaminio area, including nearby structures such as the Auditorium and the sports hall. The financial side is also under scrutiny, with the plan described as incomplete because it lacks a sufficiently detailed breakdown of costs, revenues, and the long term management model.
The broader reality is that Lazio’s vision, turning the long neglected Flaminio into a modern home with a capacity around 50,000, is still alive but now tied to a technical review that appears stricter than the club expected. The project can continue, but only after Lazio deliver the missing documentation and adjust the proposal to meet the standards the City is demanding.
