Sarri: "We Had The Wrong Attitude, We Should Have Won 4-2 But Made A Lot Of Errors In Front Of The Goal."

Maurizio Sarri explained the causes of Lazio's 2-1 loss in the first leg of the top 16 round that took place on Tuesday (07/03) evening local time. The coach attributed the loss of focus to the game to his team, which took place at the Olimpico Stadium.

After 18 minutes, Pedro scored the only goal of the game as Lazio started on a positive note but they failed to maintain their lead and were equalized by AZ Alkmaar before the break. The hosts appeared to be more lethargic in the second half,  and this was capitalized by the visitors, who scored the winner just after the hour mark and thus took a one-goal lead over them towards the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League.

Sarri was dissatisfied with the outcome of the match between AZ and Biancoceleste and explained the reasons.

"We had the wrong attitude, after a successful start, we began to retreat and play the last 20 meters, we overacted by returning toward the goalkeeper instead of keeping them from our goal," the coach was quoted as saying by Football-Italia.

"We created a lot of opportunities. We should have won 4-2 but made a lot of errors in front of the goal, which we will discuss this morning; we scored a few goals but created a lot of chances. We lost ruthlessness and focus as a result."

He then described the two goals conceded by his team in that game.

"We made mistakes in our defense, but it was a situation that could have been avoided."
