Firpo Could Lead Lazio's Full-Back Revolution This Summer

Lazio are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Junior Firpo from Leeds United as part of their summer overhaul, with the club prioritizing reinforcements in the full-back department. The 28-year-old left-back is seen as a strong candidate to bolster Marco Baroni’s squad for the 2025/2026 season.

The need for defensive reinforcements has become increasingly urgent for Lazio, especially with Nuno Tavares' future up in the air. Meanwhile, veterans Elseid Hysaj and Adam Marusic have entered their thirties, raising concerns about stamina and long-term consistency. Additionally, doubts continue to surround Luca Pellegrini’s form and commitment, with reports suggesting the Italian defender has failed to meet training expectations.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Lazio's management has identified Firpo as a prime target to address this issue. The Dominican international’s contract with Leeds United is set to expire at the end of the season, making him an appealing option on a free transfer.

Firpo played a pivotal role in Leeds United's Championship campaign, helping the club push for promotion back to the Premier League. Despite his contributions, his future at Elland Road looks increasingly uncertain, with several European clubs circling — including Lazio, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid.

Having previously impressed at Real Betis, Firpo earned a move to Barcelona in 2019. However, his stint with the Catalan giants was underwhelming, with only 41 appearances in two seasons. In 2021, he made the switch to Leeds for €15 million, where he found more stability, featuring in 119 matches and contributing six goals and 22 assists.

Though originally capped at youth level by Spain, Firpo made headlines in March 2024 when he debuted for the Dominican Republic senior team, honoring his heritage.

With a player of Firpo’s experience and attacking flair, Lazio hope to add depth, pace, and creativity to their flanks — crucial elements as the Biancoceleste aim to compete on multiple fronts next season.
