Guendouzi Ready To Stay At Lazio, But Calls For Salary Review

Matteo Guendouzi has affirmed his desire to remain with Lazio, but the French midfielder has made it clear that a salary adjustment is necessary for his long-term commitment. Despite drawing serious interest from Premier League sides Newcastle United and Aston Villa, Guendouzi is not pushing for an exit—provided the club recognizes his growing role with a corresponding pay rise.

Arriving from Olympique Marseille in the summer of 2023, the 26-year-old has quickly become a cornerstone in Marco Baroni’s tactical setup. Though his debut season in Serie A lacked fireworks, Guendouzi’s tireless engine and reliable performances earned him 47 appearances across all competitions, contributing one goal and five assists.

His impact has not gone unnoticed in England, but the former Arsenal and PSG academy player remains focused on Lazio. After the recent 2-2 draw against Inter Milan, Guendouzi reiterated his satisfaction with life in Rome, while hinting at the ongoing discussions behind the scenes.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Guendouzi’s primary request isn’t a contract extension—the current deal runs until June 2028—but a revised salary. Earning €1.3 million per year, he believes his wages fall short of reflecting his role as a consistent starter, especially when contrasted with what Premier League suitors might offer.

Insiders suggest that Alessio Romagnoli’s recent conflict with Lazio over unfulfilled promises may have inspired Guendouzi to speak up. Now, the spotlight turns to club president Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani to see whether they will meet Guendouzi’s expectations and avoid another contract standoff.

Lazio’s midfield future may well depend on how they handle this negotiation.
