Peace Talks Begin: Romagnoli and Lazio Discuss Contract Resolution
Tensions have recently flared between Lazio and defender Alessio Romagnoli, prompting the club to initiate efforts to rebuild their relationship with the Italian international. Despite his strong ties to the club and comfort in Rome, Romagnoli has publicly voiced his frustration over unmet promises—particularly regarding a pay raise that was supposed to follow Lazio’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Romagnoli, a lifelong Lazio supporter, joined the club in 2022 after leaving AC Milan as a free agent. Although he received more lucrative offers elsewhere, he chose to sign with Lazio for €3 million per year, under the condition that his salary would be increased should he help the team secure a top-four finish. That goal was achieved in the 2022/23 season, with Lazio finishing second in Serie A. However, the promised salary adjustment never materialized.
Two weeks ago, after a match against Juventus ended in a 1-1 draw, Romagnoli alluded to his dissatisfaction—a remark that reportedly did not sit well with the club's top brass. According to Il Messaggero, sporting director Angelo Fabiani recently met with Romagnoli’s agent, Enzo Raiola, to address the issue and begin negotiations aimed at mending the rift.
Although the outcome of that meeting remains unclear, Lazio remain keen on retaining Romagnoli. Club officials are now considering offering the 30-year-old a new contract worth €3.5 million annually, aligning his pay with that of team captain Mattia Zaccagni, currently the squad’s highest earner.
Romagnoli’s current contract is valid until June 2027, and despite the recent strain, Lazio regard the experienced centre-back as a vital pillar in their project moving forward.
