Final Days For Vecino At Lazio? Lazio Hestitate On His Contract Decision

Uncertainty continues to cloud the future of Matías Vecino at Lazio, following a recent summit at Formello involving club president Claudio Lotito, sporting director Angelo Fabiani, and coach Maurizio Sarri (connected via video call). Despite discussions, no clarity has emerged regarding the Uruguayan midfielder’s next steps, and with just three weeks remaining until the transfer window deadline, a farewell is becoming an increasingly real possibility.

Vecino, who arrived in Rome in the summer of 2022 at Sarri’s request, has been a valuable utility player for the Biancoceleste. However, the 2024 season proved challenging for the 32-year-old, as a serious muscle injury sidelined him for three months and hampered his form. Although he showed signs of recovery in the final matches, doubts linger over his long-term role at the club.

With Vecino’s contract set to expire and Lazio yet to initiate talks for an extension, the silence from the management has left the player frustrated. Earning a net salary of €2 million, the midfielder’s future also weighs on the club’s financial considerations, as Lazio assesses the possibility of bringing in a younger profile, such as Empoli’s rising talent Jacopo Fazzini.

Interest in Vecino is heating up across Europe. Real Betis, led by coach Manuel Pellegrini, are particularly keen and view the Uruguayan as an ideal replacement for Johnny Cardoso. Portuguese giants Benfica and newly-promoted Como have also entered the race for his signature. Despite receiving interest from abroad, Vecino has made it clear that Lazio remains his first choice, at least for the time being.

The arrival of Maurizio Sarri for a new spell on the Lazio bench could also factor into the decision. While the pair had their differences in the past, mutual respect now prevails, potentially opening the door for Vecino’s stay. However, the club’s current hesitation and lack of communication have not gone unnoticed, and with only 21 days left before the contract deadline, the possibility of an imminent departure grows.

In the coming days, Lazio may finally reach out to the player to discuss terms for a possible renewal, but as things stand, the separation seems ever closer. For now, all eyes are on Formello as the Vecino saga enters its final stretch.
