Dele-Bashiru: "These Friendlies Are Key For Us, Not Just To Compete, But To Adapt, Improve, And Understand What The Coach Wants. My Goal Is Simple: Help The Team Reach The Champions League."
Lazio may have suffered a 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce in their third preseason friendly, but for Maurizio Sarri, the focus remains firmly on progress, not results. On a night that reunited two former Roman rivals in Sarri and Mourinho, the Biancoceleste continued their preparation for the new season, with valuable minutes earned and tactical adjustments tested.
At the heart of Sarri’s evolving project is Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, a player still adapting to a new role, new expectations, and a system that demands precision and growth. Following the match, the 23-year-old midfielder shared his reflections with Lazio Style Channel and the press, offering insight into his mindset, ambitions, and relationship with his coach.
“It’s a new way of playing,” Dele-Bashiru admitted. “I’m happy to take on this challenge in midfield. These friendlies are key for us, not just to compete, but to adapt, improve, and understand what the coach wants. We’ve been training hard since the start of preseason, and playing with high intensity is going to be essential for the year ahead.”
Returning to Turkey, a country he knows well from his time at Hatayspor, added an emotional layer to the match. “Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have always been strong sides here, facing them is never easy,” he said.
The Nigerian-English midfielder was full of praise for Maurizio Sarri, who has returned to Lazio in search of tactical balance and consistency.
“He’s a top-notch coach,” said Dele-Bashiru. “For someone like me, who doesn’t have much top-flight experience, it’s a huge advantage to learn from him. If I keep listening, stay focused, and follow his guidance, I know I can develop a lot this season.”
Sarri’s tactical approach places great emphasis on discipline and movement in midfield, an area where Dele-Bashiru’s physical presence and raw energy could become invaluable if molded correctly.
Dele-Bashiru isn’t hiding his ambition. “I’m really happy to be back at Lazio for my second season. My goal is simple: help the team reach the Champions League. I also want to improve my own game, especially in front of goal.”
In last season’s campaign, the midfielder showed glimpses of promise but struggled for consistency. With a full preseason under Sarri and greater responsibility on his shoulders, Dele-Bashiru is determined to make his mark.
When asked about teammate Mattia Zaccagni’s recent statement, saying he’s “banking on” Dele-Bashiru this season, the midfielder responded humbly.
“I hope so,” he smiled. “This season won’t be easy, for any of us. But we’ll take it one step at a time, work hard every day, and aim to give the fans something to be proud of.”
