Following Lazio’s narrow 1-0 win over Avellino in the Sandro Criscitiello Memorial, Nicolò Rovella spoke from the mixed zone with a clear and determined message: Lazio are rebuilding—with humility, unity, and the goal of returning to Europe firmly in sight.

The Biancoceleste midfielder, who played an influential role in the friendly, acknowledged the challenges of the summer so far, including the club's transfer ban and intensive training sessions at Formello. “We were confined to Formello and had many double sessions. We worked hard to bring Lazio back to Europe after a season that wasn’t up to our standards,” Rovella said. “We’ve just begun this journey with the coach, and we must succeed.”

Rovella praised Maurizio Sarri’s leadership and made it clear that he is committed to following the coach’s instructions to the letter. “Sarri is a master. I spoke with him during the summer, and again when I returned to Formello. For now, he sees me as a deep-lying midfielder, and I’m happy in that role. I’ll do whatever the coach asks of me.”

He emphasized the importance of buying into Sarri’s system, particularly with regard to playing style: “We’re a more compact team this year. Sarri wants us to favor shorter passes and move up the pitch together. Possession and defensive organization are key areas we’re working on.”

The 23-year-old also reflected on his individual progress and ambition, noting that his last two seasons have seen consistent growth. “I hope to grow even further this year. The World Cup is a big goal for me, and I’ll work hard to stay in the national team setup.”

When asked about his role within the squad, Rovella didn’t shy away from embracing leadership: “I feel a bit like a leader now. I’ve grown a lot, and I want to take care of this team in the best way possible. But above all, I want to improve, game by game.”

Rovella was also quick to recognize the unwavering support of the Lazio faithful. “The fans are fantastic. Even during this tough period, they’ve shown up in numbers. Their affection has never been lacking. We count on them—they’re special to us.”

As Lazio continue their preseason preparations with an upcoming tour in Turkey, Rovella’s words reflect a squad that is grounded, motivated, and determined to bounce back from a disappointing season. Under Sarri’s guidance, the road back to Europe may be tough—but the belief is there.
