Transfer Talks Ongoing: Fares Could Leave Lazio For Greece Again

As Lazio navigates a quiet summer transfer window, the club’s attention have shifted to offloading surplus players, with Mohamed Fares emerging as one of the key names set to depart. The Algerian full-back, under contract until 2026, is no longer in the club’s plans and could soon bring his Roman chapter to a definitive close.

Fares arrived at Lazio in 2020 from SPAL, expected to provide width and energy down the left flank. However, a series of injuries and inconsistent performances kept him from establishing a regular role in the squad. Over the years, multiple loan spells—including a recent one at Genoa—failed to reignite his career.

That changed last season, when Fares joined Panserraikos in the Greek Super League. There, he finally found continuity, clocking in regular minutes and showing flashes of the potential that once brought him to Serie A. The Greek experience seems to have revived both his form and his confidence.

Now back in Rome for preseason training at Formello, Fares remains a player Lazio is eager to move on. Head coach Maurizio Sarri has no space for him in his tactical project, and with the squad still overcrowded, Lazio must prioritize outgoings to reduce both numbers and the wage bill.

According to reports from Il Corriere dello Sport and Tuttomercatoweb, Fares’s representatives—Team Raiola—are actively working on securing his next move. Interest from Greece has been immediate, with PAOK Thessaloniki, Aris Thessaloniki, and Asteras Tripolis all expressing interest.

A potential loan with an option to buy appears to be the preferred solution. It would give Fares another shot at long-term playing time while offering Lazio financial relief. For the player, it could finally be the permanent restart his career has long needed.
