Lazio Cutting Ties: Gigot Expected To Depart Before Deadline
Samuel Gigot’s adventure with Lazio looks to be over after just one season. The French defender, signed from Olympique Marseille last summer, has slipped out of Maurizio Sarri’s plans and is now close to leaving the club permanently.
Gigot’s situation became clear during the preseason. He missed almost all the friendly matches due to persistent back pain, with only a few minutes of action against the Primavera side. His physical issues, combined with difficulties fitting into Sarri’s defensive system, have pushed him to the margins of the squad.
The condition, lumbosciatica, caused discomfort in his lower back and leg, keeping him away from regular training sessions. For a player brought in to replace Nicolò Casale, now at Bologna, it has been a disappointing year in Rome.
Lazio are keen to recover the €4 million they spent on Gigot, and the club is also mindful of his €1.8 million annual salary, which puts a strain on their budget. According to Corriere dello Sport, several teams are interested in him. Options include clubs in France, Greece with PAOK Thessaloniki, and the Middle East, with sides from Dubai and Qatar showing interest.
The Biancoceleste cannot afford to make a loss on the transfer, especially with Covisoc financial requirements to be met before September 30. The sale of Gigot would add to other recent outgoing deals, such as Casale’s move to Bologna for €6.5 million and Tchaouna’s €15 million transfer to Burnley.
With his future now away from the capital, Gigot is expected to be one of the two players excluded from Lazio’s Serie A squad list. The club hopes to finalize his departure soon, ensuring both squad balance and financial stability ahead of the new season.
