Unresolved Contract Talks Leave Lazio With Hard Decision On Gila

The atmosphere at Formello has once again been stirred by transfer market concerns, and this time the spotlight falls on Mario Gila. The Spanish defender, born in 2001, is becoming one of the most debated figures within the Biancoceleste camp, with his future appearing more and more uncertain.

Reports from Il Messaggero and journalist Alberto Abbate suggest that Gila’s relationship with the club is reaching a critical stage. Despite meetings between his entourage and sporting director Angelo Fabiani, no agreement has been reached regarding a new contract or the salary increase that the player is asking for. The lack of progress has fueled disappointment, leaving Gila increasingly detached from Lazio’s project.

Last summer, Premier League clubs such as Chelsea and Bournemouth expressed concrete interest in securing Gila’s services. However, under then-coach Maurizio Sarri, Lazio opted to reject all proposals, prioritizing squad depth during a delicate transfer ban period. The decision may now come back to haunt the club, as the possibility of losing the player without financial compensation grows stronger.

Adding to the complexity is the fact that Real Madrid, where Gila was developed, still retains 50% of his future transfer rights. This clause makes negotiations less straightforward, though it also increases his appeal on the European market, as several clubs see him as a balanced mix of youth, potential, and affordable cost.

According to Abbate, Gila’s intentions are becoming increasingly clear: the defender wants to find a new environment that can offer him trust and playing time. Whether in the January window or more realistically in the summer of 2025, his departure now looks probable. Abbate summed it up bluntly: “My impression is that Gila wants to leave on a free transfer. He would have left already this summer, but Lazio were unable to sell him due to the transfer ban.”
