Sarri Faces New Challenge As Cancellieri Joins Lazio’s Injury List
Lazio’s injury troubles continue to mount as they prepare for another major test in Serie A against Juventus. The Biancoceleste will have to cope without Matteo Cancellieri, who suffered a muscular injury during the first half of the match against Atalanta.
Early assessments indicate that Cancellieri has sustained an issue with the flexor muscle in his left thigh. Further medical examinations will be carried out in the coming days, but his chances of featuring against Juventus appear slim. The setback comes just as Maurizio Sarri’s side seemed to be recovering from a long list of absentees, with Zaccagni, Dia, and Marusic only recently returning to the lineup in Bergamo.
Cancellieri’s pace and direct attacking style had been valuable assets for Sarri’s tactical plans, making his absence another difficult blow for a squad that has struggled to maintain fitness consistency throughout the season. Despite the frustration, there is a glimmer of hope from Luca Pellegrini, who could make his return against Juventus. The left-back has resumed partial training after recovering from a knee sprain sustained against Genoa and is targeting a spot in the matchday squad.
The injury list, however, remains lengthy. Rovella continues to manage groin discomfort, Dele-Bashiru is still unavailable, Castellanos is expected to be sidelined for at least six more weeks, and Gigot remains a long-term absentee.
There was one encouraging sight for Lazio supporters in the draw against Atalanta: the return of Matías Vecino. The Uruguayan midfielder made his first appearance after more than two months out, bringing back much-needed balance and experience to the midfield. His gradual reintegration is expected to play an important role as the team navigates a demanding schedule.
Lazio will resume recovery sessions tomorrow before returning to full training on Wednesday. Maurizio Sarri will be hoping to regain several key players before the crucial away clash in Turin, a match that could prove decisive in shaping the Biancoceleste’s momentum and confidence for the remainder of the season
