Different Visions At Lazio As January Midfield Targets Emerge
As the January transfer window approaches, Lazio’s recent improvements have not erased the sense that reinforcements are still needed. The most pressing concern remains midfield, where Maurizio Sarri has repeatedly stressed the importance of adding a player capable of providing stability, control, and balance between defense and attack. However, the paths envisioned by the coach and the club’s sporting director appear to be moving in different directions.
According to Il Messaggero, Sarri initially focused on experienced profiles who could deliver immediate guarantees. One of the names on his list was Ruben Loftus Cheek, but AC Milan have effectively blocked any possibility of a move. This forced the Lazio coach to reassess his options ahead of the winter market.
Among the alternatives evaluated by Sarri is Lazar Samardzic of Atalanta. The midfielder has already made a strong impression in Serie A, scoring three goals in forty four appearances, and is seen by Sarri as a profile capable of adding quality and verticality to the team’s play.
The club’s strategy, however, seems to follow a different route. The same report suggests that sporting director Angelo Fabiani is targeting younger and more development oriented profiles. Among the names he is reportedly pursuing are Fabio Miretti of Juventus and Marco Brescianini, also currently at Atalanta. Fabiani is believed to be working quietly on these fronts, aiming to secure midfield depth that fits both the sporting project and financial parameters.
Beyond these primary targets, Lazio’s scouting department continues to monitor emerging talents. Tom Watson and Tommaso Berti remain under observation, while Ivan Ilic is still viewed as a player who could one day return to wear the Biancocelesti shirt.
The contrast between Sarri’s preference for ready made solutions and Fabiani’s inclination toward younger profiles highlights an internal debate that could shape Lazio’s January window. With time running short, the club must find common ground to address midfield needs without compromising long term planning. How this balance is struck will define Lazio’s next steps in a season that still demands careful management and strategic clarity.
