Lazio Monitor Calabria As Possible Return To Serie A Takes Shape

Davide Calabria’s experience in Greece could be shorter than initially expected. After joining Panathinaikos last summer, the Italian full back is now attracting renewed interest from Serie A, with Lazio closely monitoring his situation ahead of next season.

Calabria left Italian football at the end of his loan spell with Bologna last June, choosing to continue his career abroad on a three year free contract with the Greek side. His first experience outside Italy has been marked by adaptation challenges and mixed emotions, something the player himself has openly acknowledged. Despite settling in Greece, Calabria has never ruled out a return to Serie A once the current campaign concludes.

Lazio have now emerged as a concrete option. Maurizio Sarri has identified Calabria as an ideal reinforcement to strengthen the right flank, an area the coach was unable to address last summer due to the transfer ban. The Biancoceleste are planning a broader squad refresh, and Calabria’s experience and tactical discipline make him a profile that fits Sarri’s system.

Born in 1996, Calabria said farewell to Serie A after a productive spell at Bologna, where he enjoyed one of the most satisfying moments of his career by lifting the Coppa Italia in the final against AC Milan. That triumph followed his earlier success with Milan, where he won the Italian Super Cup against Inter. Those achievements added silverware to a career largely defined by loyalty to the Rossoneri.

His move to Panathinaikos represented a bold step and his first taste of football abroad. While Calabria has expressed overall satisfaction with the experience, a call from Lazio could prove decisive. Sarri is keen to reshape the squad and sees Calabria as a reliable option capable of providing consistency and leadership on the right side of defense.

This potential move is also linked to the future of Adam Marusic. The winger’s contract with Lazio is nearing its end, and negotiations over an extension have reportedly been halted. Marusic could therefore leave the capital, although his next destination may still be within Serie A, as Milan and Inter are both alert to the possibility of signing him on a free transfer.

As Lazio prepare to re enter the transfer market without restrictions, Calabria’s name continues to gain momentum. His return to Serie A appears increasingly realistic, with the Biancoceleste positioning themselves as a serious contender to bring him back to Italian football and hand him a central role in Sarri’s renewed project.
