Lazio Plan Major January Reinforcements After Transfer Ban Is Lifted
After months of frustration and stagnation, Lazio are finally preparing to re enter the transfer market. The chaos of last summer, when the club was blocked by COVISOC from registering new signings, has left a clear mark on the season. Maurizio Sarri was forced to work with an inherited squad while direct rivals strengthened aggressively, a factor that explains much of Lazio’s uneven campaign.
Although recent results have shown signs of recovery, Lazio still sit eight points behind fourth placed Roma. European qualification remains possible, but only if the squad receives reinforcements in January. The lifting of the transfer ban therefore represents a turning point, and the club’s strategy is beginning to take shape.
According to some reports, Lazio are expected to bring in multiple players, starting with roles Sarri considers essential. These are not luxury signings but structural additions aimed at correcting clear deficiencies in the squad.
The first priority is midfield. Sarri has repeatedly highlighted the lack of goals, creativity, and technical quality from the center of the pitch. While Toma Basic has shown encouraging improvement, it is not enough to carry the department. Lazio are therefore expected to replace one between Fisayo Dele Bashiru and Reda Belahyane with a midfielder capable of contributing in the final third. The main profiles being evaluated are Ivan Ilic, Lazar Samardzic, and Marco Brescianini.
Another urgent need is on the left wing. Mattia Zaccagni’s suspension exposed how little depth Lazio have in that role. Sarri has pushed strongly for the signing of his former Napoli player Lorenzo Insigne, who is currently available on a free transfer and has reportedly already agreed personal terms. Daniel Maldini is also being monitored as an alternative profile.
Goalkeeper is another position under review. Ivan Provedel has firmly established himself as Sarri’s first choice, leaving Christos Mandas marginalized and likely to depart in January. Genoa have emerged as a concrete option, proposing a deal that would see Nicola Leali move in the opposite direction. Filip Stankovic remains another candidate should Lazio opt for a different solution.
The left back position could also change. With Nuno Tavares increasingly linked to a move to Saudi Arabia, Lazio may need a replacement behind Luca Pellegrini. Aaron Martin, whose contract with Genoa is expiring, is currently the favorite, while Luca Netz represents a younger alternative.
Finally, Lazio are also reflecting on the striker position. Taty Castellanos remains the reference point in attack, but the club would consider selling him for the right offer. In that scenario, Sarri would seek a forward more aligned with his tactical principles. Two LaLiga based profiles have been mentioned internally, Giacomo Raspadori and Mikel Oyarzabal.
The January window will therefore be decisive. Lazio are not looking for cosmetic changes, but for a genuine reshaping of the squad. How many players arrive will depend on outgoing deals, but the message is clear. After months of forced immobility, Lazio are ready to act, and Sarri finally has the opportunity to mold the team according to his vision.
