[Official] Stankovic Returns Home As He Takes Charge Of Red Star Belgrade Again
Dejan Stankovic has officially returned to Red Star Belgrade, marking another significant step in the career of one of Lazio’s most iconic former players. After resigning from Spartak Moscow, the Serbian coach has gone back to the club where he grew up, both as a player and later as a manager, taking charge once again of Red Star’s first team.
Stankovic, who joined Lazio as a teenager before an icon of the Biancoceleste, had already led Red Star between 2019 and 2022. His first spell ended after elimination in the Champions League playoffs, but it was nonetheless highly successful. During that period, he guided the club to three league titles and two domestic cups, reestablishing Red Star’s dominance in Serbian football.
Speaking at his presentation press conference, Stankovic expressed strong emotions about his return. “It’s great to be home again,” he said, thanking club director Zvezdan Terzić and paying tribute to former coach Vladan Milojević for his work with the team. Stankovic underlined that his experience over the past six or seven years has taught him how demanding and intense life at Red Star can be, describing the role as difficult, beautiful, and emotionally charged all at once.
He made it clear that the decision to return was never in doubt. “If Red Star calls, you show up,” he explained, stressing that the club’s ambitions leave no room for half measures. According to Stankovic, the objectives are clear and extend across all competitions. Red Star, in his words, cannot afford to focus on just one trophy or one tournament.
The former Lazio midfielder also addressed the current state of the squad. He acknowledged that the team had gone through a challenging phase, particularly toward the end of the year, but expressed confidence in their quality. Stankovic announced that preparations will restart on January 3rd, with the aim of restoring energy and motivation ahead of domestic commitments and European competition.
During the press conference, Stankovic also spoke about Marko Arnautovic, whom he knows well from their playing days. He described the forward as a charismatic figure with enormous talent, admitting that while Arnautovic did not arrive in perfect condition, his presence remains crucial for the club. Stankovic confirmed that he has already spoken with him and with other players, noting that several members of the squad have begun working individually during the short break.
