Lazio Confirm Mattia Zaccagni Injury And Four Week Absence
Lazio have been dealt a major setback after captain and star winger Mattia Zaccagni suffered an injury that is expected to keep him out for roughly a month. The news arrives just days after Maurizio Sarri’s side produced a dramatic 3 to 2 victory over Genoa CFC last Friday at the Stadio Olimpico.
Zaccagni did not feature in that win, and the reason has now been clarified. Lazio released a statement explaining that medical tests carried out at the Villa Mafalda clinic revealed a moderate injury to the oblique muscle in his abdomen. According to Sky Sport Italia, the winger is expected to be sidelined for at least four weeks, which would rule him out of the next four matches across Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
It is a significant blow for both Lazio and the Italian national setup, given Zaccagni’s output this season. He has scored four goals and delivered one assist in 20 appearances across Serie A and the Coppa Italia, underlining his importance in the final third as well as his leadership as captain.
Sarri’s options are also already stretched elsewhere. Lazio remain without Patric and Samuel Gigot, adding to the sense that this is an awkward moment for the squad to absorb another key absence. On the brighter side, Lazio have reinforced during the January window by adding Kenneth Taylor, Daniel Maldini, Petar Ratkov, Edoardo Motta, and Adrian Przyborek.
For Lazio, the immediate challenge is clear. They must navigate the next run of league and cup fixtures without their captain, while hoping the recovery timeline holds and Zaccagni can return quickly for the key stretch of the season run in.
