Sarri: "Creating Opportunities Was Not The Issue. The Problem Was Elsewhere. We Have To Find Motivation That Comes From Within Ourselves."

Lazio’s Serie A trip to Turin ended in another setback on Sunday night, as Torino claimed a 2–0 win and left Maurizio Sarri visibly frustrated with what he described as a collective lack of energy and motivation. With the Coppa Italia semi final first leg against Atalanta now just days away, Sarri did not try to soften his assessment.

Speaking after the match, the coach insisted Lazio’s main issue was not tactical structure or even chance creation. “As for energy, we were inferior to our opponents,” Sarri said. “We never won a loose ball. The absurd thing is that we had five chances on goal and they had four, so creating opportunities was not the issue. The problem was elsewhere.”

That “elsewhere” was mental, in Sarri’s view. He pointed to a team that simply did not arrive with the right intensity, and he implied he had sensed the danger before kick off. In short, Lazio did not match Torino’s bite, especially in second balls and duels, and once they fell behind they never looked capable of shifting the rhythm.

Sarri also explained one of his key in game decisions, the substitution involving Petar Ratkov. The coach said he wanted to inject more liveliness, turning to Tijjani Noslin for a different type of movement and pace. “I want our game to be more lively, Noslin can give it,” Sarri said, before adding a warning that individual changes do not matter if the collective attitude stays the same: “But I know that if the team doesn’t change as a whole, it’s pointless.”

With Atalanta coming to the Olimpico for the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi final on March 4, Sarri’s final message was essentially a challenge to the dressing room. He made it clear he does not believe motivation can be manufactured by logistics alone. “If you have incredible motivation, you can find it the day before the game,” he said. “If not, you can stay in the training camp for a month, and that’s fine. We have to find motivation that comes from within ourselves.”

For Lazio, the concern is obvious. Results aside, Sarri sounded more worried about the team’s emotional level than any single tactical detail. And with a season defining cup night approaching, Lazio need more than adjustments on the board. They need a response in intensity, conviction, and personality.
