Pepe Reina's Contract With Lazio Will Automatically Extended

September 08, 2021

Lazio goalkeeper, Pepe Reina's contract will be automatically extended for another year if the Italian capital club qualifies for European competition this season. The veteran goalkeeper from Spain is still the first choice at the Olimpico so far.

As reported by the Italian newspaper, La Repubblica revealed that the 39-year veteran Spanish goalkeeper, Pepe Reina is still the main choice of coach Maurizio Sarri this season again eliminating Albanian goalkeeper, Thomas Strakosha in the first position.

Thomas Strakosha hopes to get minutes in the Europa League this season before rethinking his future, his current contract with the Biancoceleste runs until next year in 2022 and so far a new contract offer has not been made to him.

While Reina's contract with Lazio will also expire next year but there is an option to extend it for another year, there is also an article in his contract which states that it will be automatically renewed until 2023 if the Roma club qualifies for European competition this season.

It seems that this is likely to be fulfilled considering that there are now three European competitions that Italian and other European league clubs can participate in, namely the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, and will activate the clause. In the 2021/22 season, Maurizio Sarri's team will join UEL after finishing sixth in the Serie A standings last season.
