5 Foreign Goalkeepers That Played For Lazio

In the past, Lazio has relied on Italian players for the goalkeeper position. Some of them are Luca Marchegiani, Angelo Peruzzi, and Federico Marchetti. They are top goalkeepers who have played hundreds of times for Lazio and were called up for the Italian national team.

However, in recent seasons, Lazio has used the services of foreign goalkeepers more frequently. Here are five names under the foreign goalkeeper's name, including one who has just been signed by Lazio in the summer 2022 transfer market.

1. Fernando Muslera

The first is the main goalkeeper of the Uruguay national team, Fernando Muslera. Muslera played for Lazio from 2007 to 2011. Having become a backup first, he has successfully won the main place in goal in his last two seasons.

At Lazio, Muslera made 113 appearances in all competitions. He also briefly led Lazio to the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup. Despite being the main goalkeeper, Muslera ultimately decided in 2011 to leave Lazio to join Galatasaray, the club he still plays for.

2. Etrit Berisha

Lazio has again made Italian goalkeeper Federico Marchetti their main option following the sale of Muslera. Marchetti has several backups, including Etrit Berisha. Berisha is an Albanian goalkeeper who played for Lazio from 2013 to 2016.

Although not the main goalkeeper, Berisha has played a lot in Lazio. He made 59 appearances in all competitions, including 38 in Serie A.

Berisha has yet to win a trophy with Lazio. However, he was voted the best foreign goalkeeper in 2013/2014 Serie A season.

3. Thomas Strakosha

Thomas Strakosha is a graduate of Lazio Academy, also from Albania. He joined the national team in 2015 and started to serve as the main goalkeeper in the 2016/2017 season. Strakosha remains at Lazio until his last departure in the summer of 2022.

Along with Lazio, Strakosha has made 208 appearances in all competitions, with a record 62 clean sheets. He also won 2 Coppa Italia trophies and 2 Italian Super Cups with Lazio. Strakosha has just left Lazio to join Brentford in the 2022 summer transfer window.

4. Pepe Reina

Pepe Reina also just left Lazio in the summer of 2022. Reina is a Spanish goalkeeper whose name has been known since he was still defending Liverpool. After leaving Liverpool, Reina has played for several clubs, including Lazio, in the 2020-2022 season.

Reina had beat Thomas Strakosha as Lazio's main goalkeeper. Despite failing to give Lazio a trophy, he made 54 appearances in all competitions.

Reina, 39, is still reluctant to retire. In the summer transfer market of 2022, Reina decided to return to Spain to defend Villarreal.

5. Luis Maximiano

Lazio has signed Maximiano from Spanish club Granada for 10 million euros. He was given the No. 1 shirt, a sign that he will be seen as Lazio's main goalkeeper. Maximiano has demonstrated his quality playing for Granada throughout the 2021/2022 season.

Maximiano was unable to keep Granada from being relegated from LaLiga in the 2021/2022 season, but he did well.

Maximiano had the highest save count in La Liga in 2021/2022, with 127 saves. He has the potential to play well when on a better team.
