Baroni And Lazio Agree On Departure To Open A New Chapter Together
Lazio are set to embark on a new chapter as head coach Marco Baroni prepares to depart after a single, eventful season in Rome. The decision, described by sporting director Angelo Fabiani as mutual, comes following extensive discussions between the club and Baroni’s camp.
Baroni, 61, joined Lazio last summer, stepping in after the departure of Igor Tudor and again after Maurizio Sarri’s exit in March 2024. Despite the challenges, Baroni made a swift impact—guiding Lazio to top their Europa League group and reaching the quarter-finals in both European and Coppa Italia competitions. Throughout the season, his team secured an impressive tally of 27 victories, 13 draws, and just 12 defeats across all competitions.
While Lazio narrowly missed out on European qualification, Fabiani emphasized the positive strides made under Baroni’s guidance, particularly in the club’s competitive spirit and fight for a Champions League place until the final rounds. “Marco Baroni made the choice to step aside for personal reasons,” Fabiani told Il Messaggero, “but it’s important to recognize how he kept the team battling at the top levels. With just a bit more luck at the Olimpico, we could be talking about a different ending.”
The official confirmation of Baroni’s departure is expected next week after a meeting with his representatives. As Lazio look ahead to a new era, the club and their supporters are grateful for Baroni’s commitment and wish him the best in his future endeavors.
