Pedro’s Contract Talks At A Standstill Following Baroni’s Departure From Lazio
It was widely expected that Pedro’s contract extension would be finalized soon after the end of the season, but for now, things have gone quiet at Formello. The Spanish attacker, who flourished under Marco Baroni this year and praised the coach for reviving his career, has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal. Pedro’s 2023/24 campaign was his most productive since arriving in Italy, finishing with 14 goals across 2,089 minutes—an impressive turnaround after the previous season, where his appearances were far more limited under Maurizio Sarri and Igor Tudor.
Despite his resurgence, Pedro has not received any updates regarding a contract renewal. The silence from Lazio’s management has sparked speculation about his future. While it’s true that Sarri initially brought Pedro to Rome in 2021, their relationship reportedly cooled during Sarri’s last period in charge. Importantly, there has been no public fallout or conflict between the player and his former coaches; however, Pedro is believed to have wanted a bigger role, especially during the Champions League run, where he started just once—against Atletico Madrid in Spain.
Last summer, Pedro even considered leaving Lazio due to feeling sidelined, but a positive pre-season under Baroni in Auronzo di Cadore convinced him to stay, leading to his best year since his Barcelona days. Until recently, his renewal appeared to be a mere formality. Now, with just a few weeks left before his contract expires, the lack of movement has raised doubts. While there’s no indication of a rift or definitive parting, it’s possible that both parties are re-evaluating their options. For now, Pedro’s extension remains the most likely scenario, but with the clock ticking, all eyes are on Lazio to see how the situation unfolds.
