Lazio Hold Back On Gigot Sale As Patric Suffers New Setback

Lazio’s preparations for the new season have taken an unexpected turn as defender Patric suffered another injury setback, casting fresh doubts over his immediate availability and potentially influencing the club’s transfer decisions in the coming weeks.

The 32-year-old Spaniard, who has been battling persistent physical issues since undergoing ankle surgery earlier this year, had only just rejoined group training at Formello. Alongside team captain Mattia Zaccagni—also on the mend—Patric’s return was seen as a positive sign for coach Maurizio Sarri ahead of a demanding campaign. However, optimism quickly turned to concern after the defender suffered a thigh strain during Friday’s training session.

Patric was consequently left out of the squad for Saturday’s friendly against Avellino in Frosinone. While initial reports suggested a possible long-term absence, the latest updates from Corriere dello Sport and Il Messaggero have eased fears, indicating the injury is not serious. The club’s medical team has opted for a cautious approach, avoiding any rush to bring him back, but there is growing confidence that he could return soon—potentially in time for the Turkish tour against Fenerbahçe (July 30) and Galatasaray (August 2).

Having joined Lazio in 2015, Patric is now the longest-serving player in the squad and one of Sarri’s most trusted figures in the dressing room. Despite injury setbacks, his tactical understanding and experience make him a valuable component of the squad, both on and off the pitch. This latest setback, however, raises questions about how much the club can rely on his physical condition throughout the season.

Sarri is reportedly planning to field Mario Gila and Alessio Romagnoli as his preferred centre-back pairing, with young Dane Oliver Provedgaard emerging as a strong backup option. Patric was expected to compete for a spot in the rotation, but his uncertain status may shift Lazio’s stance regarding other defenders—especially Samuel Gigot.

Lazio’s ongoing transfer restrictions further complicate matters. Without the ability to bring in reinforcements, the club is unlikely to let Gigot leave unless Patric returns to full fitness soon. In the meantime, all eyes will be on the Spaniard’s recovery timeline as Lazio navigate the closing stages of pre-season.
