Marusic’s Versatility Becomes Sarri’s Secret Weapon Against Genoa

September 29, 2025

Lazio’s squad crisis has once again highlighted the value of Adam Marušić. The Montenegrin international, born in 1992, has long been one of the Biancoceleste’s most dependable players thanks to his adaptability, and this weekend he may be called upon to reinvent himself once more.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Maurizio Sarri is considering pushing Marušić into a midfield role for the upcoming Serie A clash against Genoa. Earlier this season, the Lazio coach had already experimented by using the versatile player as a central defender to provide stability during difficult spells. This time, however, the plan is to place him higher up the pitch, operating on the wing.

The idea is not entirely new. Just last season, in a trip to Genoa, Marušić had already featured in a wide midfield position during a 2-0 victory under then-coach Marco Baroni. His willingness to adapt and perform wherever the team requires makes him a rare tactical asset within the squad.

With injuries decimating Lazio’s midfield, Sarri is weighing up two possible systems. A 4-4-2 would ensure better defensive balance on the flanks, while a 4-2-3-1 could unlock the attacking qualities of his playmakers. In either case, Marušić’s involvement on the wing is seen as a reliable solution to restore balance.

Lazio’s opponents will be Patrick Vieira’s Genoa, a side renowned for their compactness at home. Breaking them down will be no easy task, which is why Marušić’s energy and discipline on the flanks could prove decisive both in covering space and in creating numerical advantages going forward.

At a time when Sarri’s options are shrinking, Marušić’s readiness to adapt once again underlines his importance to the squad. Willing to set aside personal preferences, the Montenegrin continues to show why he is considered one of Lazio’s most reliable and valuable players.
