Sarri Smiles Again With Squad Depth Restored Ahead Of Lazio's First Match In 2026

The week leading into Lazio’s first match of 2026 brings a rare sense of relief for Maurizio Sarri. For the first time in months, the Biancoceleste coach can approach a league fixture with almost his entire squad at his disposal, a scenario that has been missing for much of the season.

Only three absences remain certain. Nicolò Rovella continues his recovery from injury, while Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Boulaye Dia are currently away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. Aside from these cases, Sarri finally has the opportunity to work with a full group during the week, allowing for calmer and more structured preparation.

There could be further positive developments. According to Corriere dello Sport, both Elseid Hysaj and Samuel Gigot may return to the squad. With the January transfer window now open, changes to the league list are permitted, making their reinstatement technically possible.

Hysaj’s situation appears particularly favorable. The Albanian full back was excluded from the Serie A squad at the end of November, but the new registration window opens the door for his return. Sarri values his tactical reliability and versatility, qualities that could prove useful as Lazio enter a demanding phase of the season.

The case of Gigot is more complex. The French defender is currently unavailable and is no longer considered part of the club’s long term technical plans. He is expected to seek a new destination during the January window. Nevertheless, in the short term, Gigot could still be reintegrated to increase defensive depth and help manage the rotation ahead of the new year.

With the squad finally close to full strength, Lazio can look ahead with renewed optimism. For Sarri, having options once again means greater flexibility, more competition in training, and the chance to restore continuity after a season repeatedly disrupted by injuries and absences.
