Marušić And Bašić Signal Desire To Stay At Lazio As Contract Talks Approach
Adam Marušić and Toma Bašić have made their intentions clear. Both players want to remain at Lazio and continue their careers in Rome beyond the end of the current season, despite growing interest from elsewhere and contracts that are nearing expiration.
According to reports from the Italian press, the Montenegrin full back and the Croatian midfielder have communicated their desire to stay at Formello to the club hierarchy. Their contracts expire at the end of the season, which technically allows them to begin negotiations with other clubs from January. However, both players have made Lazio their priority.
For the club, this represents a different scenario compared to other veterans whose futures appear to be elsewhere. Unlike Pedro, Matías Vecino and Elseid Hysaj, who are expected to leave when their deals expire, Marušić and Bašić remain part of Maurizio Sarri’s technical plans. The coach values their tactical reliability and experience, especially in a squad that has lacked continuity due to injuries and market restrictions.
Club president Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani are now faced with a decision. Meetings with the players’ representatives are expected in the coming days, during which Lazio will decide whether to offer contract extensions or propose revised terms. With the transfer ban lifted, the club is once again free to negotiate renewals, including potential salary adjustments, should the ownership deem them sustainable.
Marušić’s situation carries additional pressure. As reported by Italian media, AC Milan are monitoring the defender closely, with sporting director Igli Tare considering a possible reunion with the player he originally brought to Lazio in 2017. Milan’s interest adds urgency to Lazio’s internal discussions, as delaying a decision could open the door to a free transfer.
For Bašić, the scenario is quieter but equally significant. After a challenging period marked by limited minutes and tactical adjustments, the midfielder has regained importance within Sarri’s system and believes his future still lies in Rome.
In the coming weeks, Lazio’s management will be tasked with balancing continuity and renewal. The decisions surrounding Marušić and Bašić could offer an early indication of the club’s strategic direction as it looks to stabilize the squad and build for the seasons ahead.
