As Lazio were celebrating the 25th anniversary of their historic 2000 Scudetto, former defender Fernando Couto has shared heartfelt memories of that unforgettable season in an interview released by the club’s official media. The Portuguese stalwart, known for his fierce defending and commanding presence, was a central figure in the squad that delivered Lazio their second Serie A title.

Couto, who enjoyed a decorated career across Europe, considers the 2000 Scudetto with Lazio particularly meaningful. “I’ve won titles in every country I played in, but that Scudetto was special—because of how it happened, and who we were,” he recalled. “We had a team full of incredible talent. Everyone played for their national teams; no one stayed behind in Formello. On the pitch, we were united and determined. That belief helped us achieve something great.”

Reflecting on the decisive day—May 14, 2000—Couto described the flood of emotions. “So many memories flashed through my mind. I looked around at my teammates and fans—everyone had their own emotion. What followed was an immense joy. It was a moment I’ll never forget.”

Couto also highlighted the high standards during training under coach Sven-Göran Eriksson. “The intensity was remarkable. Everyone was at a top level, making team selections tough for the coach. With so many matches and national duties, rotation was necessary. Sometimes it was hard because everyone wanted to play.”

When asked about the sale of Christian Vieri, Couto emphasized the depth of the squad. “It was a time of constant renewal. We lost one great player and brought in another. Lazio had the best team in Italy back then, and honestly, we could have won even more.”

For Couto, the Scudetto remains the crown jewel of his time in Rome. “That title was the most beautiful. We lived close to each other near Formello, with our families. Those were some of the best moments of my career.”
