Sarri Evaluates Formation Alternatives For Genoa Game

September 22, 2025

Lazio’s coach Maurizio Sarri is facing one of the toughest challenges of his time at the club. With Monday’s away match against Genoa coming soon, the Biancoceleste are still in the middle of a serious midfield emergency that has left the squad with very few options.

At the training ground in Formello, Sarri is rethinking everything. Only Danilo Cataldi is fully available, with Toma Bašić expected to return. This situation makes it very difficult to continue with the usual 4-3-3 system. According to Corriere dello Sport, Sarri is now studying different tactical setups to adapt.

Two main alternatives are on the table:

  • 4-4-2 for a more solid approach with a compact midfield.
  • 4-2-3-1 for a slightly more attacking style, giving extra support in the middle of the pitch.

Another bold idea is to keep the 4-3-3 but use Mattia Zaccagni in midfield. Normally a winger, Zaccagni could bring creativity and energy to a weakened area, though the move would change the team’s balance in attack.

Sarri’s big hope is to recover Matías Vecino in time for the match. His experience and ability to play multiple roles would be a huge boost. If the emergency continues, even defender Patric might be tested in midfield as a last resort.

No matter what, the team that takes the field at Marassi will look very different from the usual Sarri side. Forced by injuries and suspensions, Lazio may show a brand-new tactical identity against Genoa
